When we got our permit at the border in Matamoros, it is for 6 months, there is an expiration date on it. We were told we have to go to a border town and renew it before the expiration date. I dont think you have to wait outside of mexico for the renewal. I will need to renew my tourist visa at that time and I dont know if I will have to wait oustside of Mex for that or not.

No, you do not have to wait outside the U.S. We also got ours at the border in Matamorros. When you get it you will have to leave a $300-$400 dollar deposit (depends on year and make) and pay around $35 for the permit. When you go to renew it you pay another $35.

My husband is been in Mexico since JUl 1, 2009. We got our permit here in California for six months (I was told that's the max that they can give you) my brother just got his in Matamoros and they gave it to him for a year.

My husband's permit was about to expired, so we had to go to the border to get another one. We went to Reynosa to get it a renewal but they only gave us the renewal for another 6 months (this is another headache) so.. now we're going to need another renewal in June (more money) Anyways.

What you need so you wont have to pay the 300 or 400 dollars deposit is your visa or martercard with you. If you pay with your cc you dont have to leave a deposit.

You will need:

Registration or title
Pastport or PRC
Driver Licence
Visa or Marter card on your name (so you wont have leave a deposit)

Also ask them if you can get it for a year instead of 6 months. Like I said I got my renewal before my brother, he got his few days after me and he got it for a year.

Ohhh one more thing, this was new to me also, If you are a USC you will need to register with immigration before you get your permit than they will send you to another window to pay (it's about 20.00 dollars this is crazy)
All this is when you are at the aduana in mexico.

another thing that confuses me is that my SIL said taht there is a american citizen that lives down there and has a brand new car! 2009 tahoe. and when the car needs another permit... that lady just goes to the closet police station to renew it. she dont have to go to border.

Someone told us the other day that he renews his permit online, he didnt say how long he has been here. They told us in Matamoros that we could go to the south border of Mexico and renew the permit also. Chiapas would be much closer for us than Matamoros, we will probably try that out.

I'm sorry I didnt get to you before.

That's what I was told at the mexican consulate here in Cali but when I went to Reynosa they didn't say anything. They gave me my renewal and didn't ask why or anything. I have to go in June again to get the renewal permit.

How can they do a renewal if is not the border? At the police station? I dont get it. When you go to the border they removed your permit you have to be right infront of a camera and the camera will read the permit number. After this you go inside and get another permit.

i guess everyboday is diffrent. because i got mine here in Fort Worth, Texas a the mexican consulado. i got it for 6 months...I should have returned it on Feb but since I didnt go up there until March i waited. Once i took the car up there the lady said that if i needed another one just to wait another 24 hrs. and this was the border of Del Rio. but unfortuneatly you do have to take the car everytime you return a permit. Hope everything turns out good for you.

WEll for me i was able to get the permit for 6 months and had to go renew it after that which was in April 2009 6 months were up in October 09 and I just couldnt leave the states to go to mexico and bring the vehicle to renew the permit again so it has been illegal for about 6 months already since my husband has been in mexico for 1 year already, so now im just worried on what they can do to me when i finally do go across the border?????
